The revelation, which positions the company significantly ahead of Amazon (with 9% of attempts), comes from a report by Check Point Research, the Threat Intelligence division of cybersecurity company Check Point.

Phishing, a social-engineered scam that involves spoofed emails from reputable companies to steal personal information, has mostly affected Microsoft. This type of scams has also implicated other big tech firms like Google (8%) and Apple (4 %) as well as companies outside this sector, including Wells Fargo and The Home Depot, both with 3 %.

Among the top ten brands affected, LinkedIn, Facebook and Netflix were also included, each with smaller percentages. The list was completed by DHL, whose presence at the top is attributed to the increase in courier activity during Black Friday.

Omer Dembinsky, data group manager at Check Point Software, highlighted the worrying trend towards an increase in phishing campaigns this year, further complicated by the advanced use of Artificial Intelligence, which makes them harder to identify.

An example of these tactics was provided by a fraudulent email that used the Microsoft name to create a sense of urgency, inducing victims to provide personal information on a fake page. Similar techniques were used in scams involving Apple, where emails were personalized

electronic tools to increase trust and urgency among victims, alerting them to storage problems in their accounts.

In short, the report by Check Point Research highlights the growing sophistication and scope of phishing scams, placing particular emphasis on Microsoft’s prominence as the main target of these attacks during the last quarter of 2023.

This Tuesday, July 11, Amazon Prime Day kicks off, an event that will last 48 hours and in which the ‘e-commerce’ platform will make available to users new offers on all kinds of products, ranging from technology to technology. fashion, through personal care, among other items.

This is an appointment marked on the calendar not only for buyers, but also for cybercriminals, who take advantage of mass purchases to carry out their corresponding malicious campaigns.

So much so that, according to Check Point data, while Amazon-related phishing campaigns have experienced an 8 % global increase, those related to Amazon Prime have multiplied 16-fold in the last month alone.

During this period, almost 1,500 new domains related to the term ‘Amazon’ were registered, of which 92 percent were found to be malicious or suspicious.

In addition, one in 68 new domains related to ‘Amazon’ was also related to ‘Amazon Prime’. About 93% of the latter were also at risk.

How to identify phishing attempts

The cybersecurity company has specified that different emails with fraudulent links that direct users to fake web pages that happen to look the same as Amazon are being distributed these days.

Hence, one of the most frequent attacks is ‘phishing’, which begins with sending an email or text message where the sender appears as ‘Amazon.co.uk’. Once the victims have accessed, they are asked for their credit card number. By filling out this form, cybercriminals have free access to your data and bank accounts.

Therefore, to buy safely on Amazon Prime Day, Check Point advises taking other graphic errors into account, since these types of false pages usually have them because they use automatic translators.

It is also convenient to use a strong password for each service and that it is not easily deciphered. That is, it should have at least 12 characters, that uppercase, lowercase, and numbers are combined, and that obvious credentials, such as birthdays or proper names, be excluded.

Likewise, it is important, when buying ‘online’, to look for the symbol of secure connection encryption (SSL), that is, the padlock on the link, which is located on the left in the address bar.

Before proceeding with the purchase, and especially if it is about ‘flash offers’, it is advisable to review what you are buying and avoid impulse clicks. Finally, you should also spot bargains, since “if something sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t,” according to Check Point.

As analyzed by the company, a provider of cybersecurity solutions for companies and governments globally, the average number of weekly attacks per organization worldwide exceeded 1,130 attacks.

The trend of cyberattacks has been consolidated in recent years, which has made companies aware of the importance of having a good cybersecurity system that avoids any type of risk, as stated by the company in a press release.

One of the difficulties has been the increase in ransomware. In the month of July, the global weekly average of organizations impacted by this type of virus was one in 40 companies. In fact, there has been an increase of 59% year-on-year.

Among these affected companies, the education and research sectors have been the most attacked, with an average of more than 2,300 attacks per organization each week, that is, an increase of 53% compared to the second quarter of 2021.

Check Point also highlights that retailers and wholesalers are the companies that have been most affected by ransomware, suffering a 182% increase in attacks compared to the previous year.

According to the document, there has been an increase since November 2020, revealing the important sector as one of the most affected by hackers, who through different methods have tried to deceive people in order to violate their systems.

Within the wide range of techniques used by cybercriminals, botnets, phishing, ransomware and even social engineering stand out, of all of them the one that worries the most is ransomware, “the main variant” of this software “used in the attacks is Ryuk , followed by Sodinokibi ”. Four. Five %

Central Europe, the most affected area

According to the Check Point report, the region most affected by cybercrime has been Central Europe, where an increase of 45% was recorded, followed by East Asia with 137% and later Latin America with 112%.

Faced with the aggravating situation, the cybersecurity company ensures that the best measure is prevention. Avoid falling into chains of deception at all costs. The question is how to do it? Look for infections caused by Trojans, make regular updates, back up information, and be alert for suspicious emails.
