The Pope addresses key issues such as human dignity in the digital age, the use of algorithms, labor justice, and employment.

The encyclical Magnifica Humanitas will be presented by Leo XIV at an event in the Vatican on the scheduled date. “The speakers at the presentation will be Cardinals Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Michael Czerny, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.”

The event will also feature the participation of “Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic (USA) and director of research on the interpretability of artificial intelligence, as well as Professors Anna Rowlands, theologian and professor at Durham University in the United Kingdom, and Leocadie Lushombo, professor of Political Theology and Catholic Social Thought at the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University in California.”

The closing remarks will be delivered by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, followed by an address from Pope Leo XIV.

Since his election, the Pope has made clear his interest in the Church’s position regarding the new “industrial revolution and the advances in artificial intelligence, which pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice, and work.” At that time, he emphasized that the economy is dominated by algorithms, platforms, and automation, questioning the possibility that many jobs will disappear due to AI.

Last Sunday, the Pope urged everyone to “commit to promoting forms of communication that always respect the truth of the human person” in the face of artificial intelligence, in an appeal at the end of the Regina Coeli prayer from the Apostolic Palace.

The Chinese search engine Baidu is currently using “machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing to understand animals.”

Using this platform, they study the sounds of dogs and cats, to name the most common pets, to understand what they are trying to convey.

AI will allow us to understand animal language

“There are some inventions like FluentPet Connect or Shazam Band that transform the way we communicate with our four-legged friends; however, with the arrival of artificial intelligence, the Chinese search engine Baidu has filed a patent with the National Intellectual Property Administration of China that can convert animal vocalizations into language understandable to humans.”

(Reference image source: CoWomen on Unsplash)

But it’s not about “translating” barks or meows into phrases as if they were words. That’s for human language. The point is “identifying relevant signals of animal behavior—such as voices, movements, gestures, or physiological changes—to understand their emotional state and express it in natural language.”

The data would then be analyzed with the intervention of AI. Currently, Baidu uses machine learning to feed large data sets into computers, combined with deep learning through neural networks to analyze behavior. Finally, it uses “natural language processing to apply computational approaches to analysis.”

There is always human involvement throughout the entire process, as the Chinese search engine team is responsible for manually labeling “information parameters if any data does not match any emotional record.”

In this sense, Baidu explains in the patent document that the system creates “deeper emotional communication and greater understanding between animals and humans, improving the accuracy and efficiency of interspecies communication.”

Doctors have indicated that a 3D printing model guided by artificial intelligence was used to design “the implant to adapt to the patient’s anatomy, ensuring a perfect fit and allowing for better adaptation and functionality,” according to the Ministry of Health.

To obtain the 3D model, previous images obtained from a computed tomography (CT) scan were used to reconstruct the bone defect.

With this procedure, the medical team managed to create “a Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) implant, a biocompatible material that allows bone cells to grow on its surface, reducing the risk of rejection of the implant because it is similar to bone.”

The placement of the 3D printing modeling plasty was fixed with self-drilling plates and screws, the public entity indicated.

It is important to note that cranioplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to correct “cranial defects, whether morphological or structural, by reconstructing the skull with various materials, usually a piece of the patient’s bone or a synthetic material.”

Doctors recommend it when it is necessary to correct traumas, previous surgical procedures or in the case of congenital malformations. With the intervention, “we seek to protect the brain and improve the aesthetics and functionality of the head.”

M.Pino

The last day of the Global Forum of Latin America and the Caribbean, which was held for two days at the Union League Club in New York, dealt with artificial intelligence, its regulation for responsible use and how it can impact democracies and the elections.

The former Dominican president and president of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode), Leonel Fernández, considered that artificial intelligence can affect electoral processes, above all, because algorithms can be used that contribute to generating a wrong perception of reality and therefore misinform the voter.

Absence of regulations

“Democracy would be affected because it would no longer be the legitimate representation of the popular will, it would be a manipulated, uninformed, distorted will and then there would be a triumph of post-truth,” commented Fernández at the forum organized in New York during the General Assembly of the UN by Funglode and International IDEA.

To avoid distortions in the upcoming electoral processes due to artificial intelligence and so that this does not affect the world’s democracies, the lawyer and member of the Venice Commission, José Luis Vargas Valdez, has demanded agility in regulation, establishing with the non-negotiable minimum industry standards and create standards and institutions to match global efforts.

The professor of Constitutional Law at the Complutense University of Madrid, Mario Hernández, spoke about the two regulations that the European Union is making on the regulation of artificial intelligence and which are expected to be ready in May 2024.

A global concern

“They are not national regulatory processes but international ones, and in one of them other countries in the world outside the EU even participate,” said Hernández.

The expert on Freedom of Expression and Elections from the UNESCO Organization for Education, Science and Culture, Albertina Piterbarg, also joined this event, defending that freedom of expression is fundamental and that we must be very pending of the four “vs”: the volume of information communicated, the speed at which it spreads, virality and the plausibility of creating content that seems true, but that misinforms.

For Piterbarg, artificial intelligence impacts political and social processes in many ways, in addition to the free circulation of ideas, and he commented that UNESCO is working on regulatory frameworks for 2024.
