Electronic commerce of sporting goods in Spain progresses slowly

The online sale of sporting goods in Spain, as well as the sale of tickets for events, fell in the first quarter of the year, compared to 2021

The ecommerce of articles, toys and tickets to sporting events in Spain marked an average decrease of 1.6 % in the first quarter of the year compared to 2021. This represents some 216.3 million euros for a key sector of the economy.

According to the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC), the previous year, the online sales sector of sporting goods experienced a boom. Despite having slowed down during the first quarter of 2022, it continues to represent almost double what was achieved before the pandemic.

The records indicate that from Spain abroad, transactions in this field of electronic commerce reached a value of 97 million euros, which represents 47 % more than last year.

With regard to recreational activities, which has less weight on the total, sales rose 61.9 %, to reach 9.9 million euros; an increase in transactions of 91.4 %.

It is important to highlight that among the sports products with the highest demand and commercialization are clothing such as footwear and shirts, accessories for different disciplines, tickets for events and competitions.
