El Salvador could be the first country to adopt bitcoin as legal currency

Nayib Bukele reported that he is working on a legal proposal that facilitates the use of cryptocurrency in national transactions

The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, announced this Saturday during a video conference on Bitcoin, that the country wants to become the first nation in the world to adopt cryptocurrency as a legal tender.

Bukele has detailed that he is working with the Strike company to build an infrastructure for the use of Bitcoin, and that the bill would be sent this week to the Legislative Assembly, reports the Salvadoran newspaper El Mundo.

In this sense, the founder and CEO of Strike, Jack Mallers, stressed that this announcement will be “a shot heard around the world.”

“What is transformative here is that Bitcoin is both the largest reserve asset ever created and a superior monetary network. Holding Bitcoin provides a way to protect developing economies from potential inflation shocks,” he added.

This bill has yet to be reviewed by the Legislative Assembly, although the Salvadoran president maintains a similar majority in this chamber.
