Eight German bear factories among the 40 largest in the world

Germany's Veltins brewery was included in the 2020 ranking for the first time, ranking 40th. However, the country's production fell by 5 %

Eight German bear factories among the 40 largest in the world in the 2020 ranking by the world’s largest hops trader, BarthHaas. The figure is one more German brewery than the previous year. No other country is as well represented as Germany in this 40-place ranking.

The German brewery Veltins managed to enter the ranking for the first time and is ranked 40. German brewers recorded a decline in production of 5 % in 2020 compared to the 6 % drop recorded by the average of the 40 beer companies in the ranking.

According to the list, the Radeberger group is the second largest German brewer. In the world comparison, it rose one place to 22nd place. Behind it is the TCB holding company, which includes, among others, the Gilde brewery, the Frankfurter Brauhaus brewery and the descorche brewery. While the Oettinger group was ranked 25, up 3 places.

Krombacher, the Bitburger brewing group and Paulaner followed international places 31 to 33. In contrast, the Warsteiner group fell one place to 39th place, with a clear setback in its production. The world’s four largest beer groups – AB Inbev, Heineken, Carlsberg and China Resources Snow Breweries – are responsible for around half of global beer production, according to analysis in this new BarthHaas report.

We observe a progressive concentration of large beer groups in the world market, while in Germany the number of private brewers increased year after year and until the beginning of the crisis due to the coronavirus, “said the director of the German Association of Brewers. Holger Eichele. The pandemic hit the brewing industry hard. In his opinion, it is not yet possible to observe all the consequences of the crisis. “Somehow, normality could only be reached in the year 2022”.
