Donald Trump, Elon Musk and Taylor Swift top list of deepfakes in 2024
The most numerous cases of deepfakes in 2024 point to Donald Trump, Elon Musk and Taylor Swift
The impersonation of a person’s image or voice in audiovisual content, known as deepfake, has increased considerably. In 2024, the most numerous cases have Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Taylor Swift as protagonists.
With the advancement of technology, particularly artificial intelligence, some developers have gone so far as to generate “fake images, usually simulating the voice and appearance of other people.”
Deepfakers now flood the Internet, especially through social networks, generating false content and distortion among users.
The images that are created with AI tools appear to be real. Initially, only developers had access to these features; however, image and video manipulation is now accessible to anyone through open source “voice cloning and lip synchronization” programs.
The video creation platform Kapwing points out that “voice cloning takes a person’s voice as an example from a short audio sample, between 10 and 15 seconds long.” It analyzes the sample and “applies the vocal characteristics to an underlying model capable of generating voice from text.”
In the case of AI for data synchronization, this technology “matches the lips of the images of the person being imitated with the sounds produced in the audio file.” The process to create an AI twin can take just ten seconds of initial footage.
Various investigations address the risks of deepfakes in terms of “identity theft or the spread of fake news.”
