Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced that the debate on constitutional reform will begin on February 15

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced in an interview with Opera Mundi that the debate on constitutional reform will begin on February 15.

Maduro said that “there is a broad consensus in the country around three fundamental issues that will be addressed during this process, which aims to unify and consolidate the climate of peace in Venezuela.”

The president referred to some issues that will be discussed in the debate, such as “the expansion of democracy towards a more direct and participatory model; the redefinition of social values in a context of exhaustion of Western civilizing models; and the establishment of a diversified and self-sustaining economy, free from dependence on oil revenues.”

During the interview, he confirmed that “the sovereignty of the people is non-transferable” and insisted that the constituent power resides in the people.
