Costa Rica shows tolerance and vigilance towards bitcoin

The president of the Central Bank of Costa Rica expressed the importance of allowing the development of the cryptographic industry under a standard of "smart regulation"

Rodrigo Cubero Brealey, president of the Central Bank of Costa Rica (CBCR), reported the creation of an innovation center on the Fintech and cryptocurrency sector, which will aim to analyze the related aspects inherent to the development of the cryptographic industry in the Central American country.

Cubero highlighted the establishment of this information center: “We are working on an innovation hub, which is going to be a kind of information center and informal conversation between industry operators, startups, people who are promoting new ideas about Fintech; on what the regulatory aspects could be and, also, it can be a forum where the authorities can envision smart regulation options.

I highlight the work that the information center has been doing, considering them very productive and relevant for the development of the cryptocurrency sector in the country. “It is a group that is working very enthusiastically on the subject and that have had productive interactions with the industry, with different operators in the industry, Fintech and cryptocurrency.”Rodrigo Cubero Brealey, president of the Central Bank of Costa Rica

These assessments were carried out within the framework of the event “Cryptocurrencies and Blockchain: a look at public policy, regulations and country opportunities”, which was organized by the Costa Rican Chamber of Information and Communication Technologies (CAMTIC) where it reaffirmed that the bank maintains a “watchful tolerance” stance with respect to the digital currency market.

“We have an attitude of vigilant tolerance. We do believe it is important to allow the fintech industry and the use of cryptocurrencies to develop, to allow a certain development without regulation being prematurely stifled. We consider it important to let the industry emerge, evolve and learn from it. It seems to us that this attitude of tolerance is fundamental,” the highest authority of the country’s regulatory body said.

From his perspective in Costa Rica, “we are all “learning”, both specialists and those who are making their debut in the ecosystem. At the end, “we are all experimenting and there is much to learn”.
