The European Commission has added ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox to the category of large internet platforms, intensifying oversight of compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA) and setting a deadline of November of this year for compliance with the controls.
The aim of the law is to “increase the transparency of large platforms and reduce the dangers linked to their services.”
“Brussels has classified ChatGPT as a very large online search engine, while Reddit and Roblox have been categorized as large internet platforms.”
The European Commission will strengthen its oversight of algorithms and the risks associated with their services, particularly regarding the “dissemination of illegal content, the protection of minors, and the impact that certain functionalities may have on the user’s mental and physical health.” It will also consider “risks associated with public safety, electoral procedures, and fundamental rights.”
The Commission may request an analysis of the platforms’ operations and, when necessary, of related systems and functions.
Classification of large platforms
This category refers to platforms with a large number of users in the European Union that warrant greater oversight compared to other digital platforms.
“With these new additions, the European Commission now has 28 online platforms and search engines classified as very large services under the Digital Services Act.”
The inclusion of ChatGPT, Roblox, and Reddit makes clear the regional strategy to “increase control over large technology companies. EU regulation also extends to the growing AI ecosystem.”
