Blizzard canceled its 2022 event
The company assured that it wants to take a space to "re-imagine what the event of the future could be like"
The American video game studio Blizzard canceled the annual Blizzconline conference, in which it usually announces its upcoming releases and news and which it planned to hold in early 2022. The decision was taken after the cases of harassment and discrimination against employees that have occurred in recent months.
“At this time, we feel that the energy it would take to put on a show like this is best directed at supporting our teams and advancing the development of our games and experiences,” the company said in a statement.
BlizzConline, or simply BlizzCon, had been celebrated for 16 years every year as the showcase where the studio announced its news, and it had only stopped celebrating in 2020 due to Covid-19, although it finally took place online on February this year.
The US company said it will take time to “re-imagine what a BlizzCon event of the future could look like” with the different ways that video game players gather today.
“Whatever the event looks like in the future, we must also make sure it feels as safe, welcoming and inclusive as possible”, the studio said.
These events occur after the State of California’s investigation of Activision Blizzard for failing to act against harassment against company workers, as well as for committing wage discrimination on the basis of gender.
