The App Store of the technology company Apple discovered, during 2021, more than 1.6 million fraudulent or unreliable applications and prevented scams in the order of 1,500 million dollars.

The technology company recently presented its annual fraud analysis and indicated that during 2021 the company was also able to detect and block more than 3.3 million stolen credit cards.

The technology firm recognized that thanks to its App Review program, it was possible to discover and prevent fraudulent applications, thus avoiding damages to users.

The App Review program is defined as a “security system that combines computer automation with human work dedicated to reviewing the applications offered in the App Store and which is a decisive component in the application verification process.”

Evolution of fraudulent methods

During the presentation of the results of the analysis carried out by the company, the existing and increasingly persistent problem of insecurity that is generated by “evil actors” was evidenced, who “seek to take advantage of the existing dependency between consumers and applications to create scams”.

According to company representatives, “bad actors continue to evolve their online fraud methods, often making their schemes more difficult to recognize”. That is why the company continues “refining its processes, creating new ones and designing solutions to face these threats”.

The most common scams are those carried out through gift cards, which are placed as a means of payment by scammers and diverted 148 million dollars during the first three quarters of the year 2021. Followed by dating applications, where users of these pages recorded losses of around 547 million dollars, which is equivalent to an increase of 80 % over the previous year.

According to data published by Fortune Business Insights, “the latest forecasts for the online fraud detection and prevention sector will grow from 30.7 billion dollars in 2022 to 129 billion dollars in 2029. Annual growth will be around 22.8 %”.
