German researchers see great potential for AI in sports

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) will become increasingly important for athletes and clubs, German researchers said this week

“We see great potential for the use of artificial intelligence in the sports and training science sector,” sports researcher Michael Fröhlich from the Technical University of Kaiserslautern told dpa.

“By processing data in clubs, apps can provide useful information about team structures, injury probabilities and athlete strains,” the expert added.

Artificial intelligence is considered a technology of the future and is already used in everyday life. It consists of creating computer systems that have human capabilities.

Sports researcher Carlo Dindorf, from the same university, stressed for his part that new technologies will provide enormous amounts of data, which is why coaches and athletes manage and interpret them as a challenge.

“Artificial intelligence can help to structure data, show peculiarities and reduce the amount of data so that people can handle it better,” said Dindorf, who is preparing a book on the subject of AI in sport with Fröhlich and other colleagues.

Both researchers warned at the same time of risks and problems. In addition to manufacturers misleading consumers about the actual use of AI in their products, the experts noted that there are rather small data sets in sport today, in contrast to other areas such as image recognition processes.

“And that’s a problem because artificial intelligence is starved for data,” Dindorf said. “Sports institutions must unite more to generate large masses of data,” recommended the scientist.
