Tesla will install a factory in Monterrey

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced on Tuesday the construction in Monterrey of the first Tesla factory in Latin America

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has confirmed that Tesla will build a factory in the Mexican city of Monterrey, in the north of the country, becoming the first that the company will have in Latin America.

In his morning conference this Tuesday, the Mexican president explained that he has spoken twice in the last week with the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, and there has been an “understanding” between the two for the company to invest in the country.

However, López Obrador has pointed out that soon the automobile firm will give more details about the start-up of the new factory. “Tesla’s arrival in the country is going to mean a considerable investment and the generation of many jobs. I want to thank Musk for being so respectful and attentive,” he highlighted.

Commitment to water scarcity

Recently, the president of Mexico had suggested that Tesla consider another location other than the State of Nuevo León (whose capital is Monterrey) since this was not “adequate” due to the lack of water.

However, and given the final location of the factory, the president has stated that the new plant will be subject to a series of commitments to deal with this problem. One of these commitments, as he has advanced, is the use of recycled water in the entire manufacturing process of electric cars, at the same time that water will be treated even for car paint.

In addition, López Obrador has insisted to Elon Musk that Mexico cannot grant the same subsidies that the United States Government provides to automobile production. However, the president has expressed that the Tesla co-founder had “perfectly” understood the situation and both spoke about the “comparative advantages” that Mexico had, making the country a “unique destination in the world.”

Along the same lines, the president has defended that Mexico’s main resource is “the quality of its workers”, as well as their ethics, responsibility and professionalism, something with which the Obrador has assured that Musk has agreed “fully.”
