Spotify will have audiobooks

The streaming audio platform will start testing audiobooks to include in its catalog

Spotify will start testing audiobooks on its streaming platform “very soon”, a decision that is part of its product catalog expansion plans after implementing the programs or podcast.

The technology company understands that they can offer an improved user experience for audiobooks, as they have already done with podcasts, indicated the chief financial officer of Spotify, Paul Vogel, on the sidelines of the second annual Evercore ISI conference.

The introduction of audiobooks would respond to the streaming audio platform’s plans to expand its product catalog, where they see growth opportunities in both established and developing markets.

Vogel noted that tests with the audiobooks will begin “very soon,” after the company has been working on its implementation for the past year. Within this strategy is the acquisition of the Findaway audiobook distributor.

Adding audiobooks to its platform would allow Spotify to compete with services like Amazon’s Audible or Scribd, among others. However, it has already made small forays into the area before, testing the format in January last year with classics like Frankenstein, Persuasion, Great Expectations, and the first book in the Harry Potter series.
