Chile to create 100,000 new jobs with policy to combat unemployment
Chilean President José Antonio Kast announced the "Chile Takes Off, with More Jobs" plan, aimed at creating 100,000 new jobs by the end of 2027 and combating high unemployment rates
Chilean President José Antonio Kast unveiled a campaign to create 100,000 new jobs before the end of 2027 in response to the high unemployment rate.
On Monday, September 28, Kast presented the “Chile Takes Off, with More Jobs” plan from La Moneda Palace. This plan is a strategy to address unemployment in the country, one of his administration’s top priorities.
In his speech, the president stated that in these six months his administration has dedicated itself to “getting its house in order” in order to attract investors back to the country. He emphasized that the nation suffers from “a structural unemployment problem that has persisted for too long, with unemployment remaining above 8 % for 43 consecutive months and currently standing at 9.5 %.”
Kast’s administration has focused on the sustainable recovery of employment, “so that Chile can grow again, invest, and generate opportunities,” doing what is necessary to “unblock investments, regain competitiveness, and generate greater certainty for those who want to invest and create jobs in our country.”
The main objective is to accelerate stalled projects, promote direct hiring, facilitate financing, and support companies’ ability to maintain and create jobs, in addition to launching a national policy with local implementation and monitoring.
The four pillars of the campaign are:
- Accelerating public investments for rapid implementation, including infrastructure, reconstruction, housing, and community works projects, in order to stimulate economic activity during the coming year.
- Expand hiring subsidies to create new jobs.
- Restore liquidity for businesses, by releasing payments to government suppliers.
- Combine large-scale infrastructure projects with community projects, in addition to reconstruction, using criteria such as unemployment, infrastructure damage, project maturity, and contracting speed, along with mechanisms for monitoring and tracking execution.
