Cryptocurrency theft using fake Claude desktop app
A fake Claude desktop application is being used to spread RevStealer malware, which has already stolen over 50 cryptocurrency wallets, login passwords, cookies, messaging data, and selected documents
Cybercriminals are using a fake Claude desktop application to spread RevStealer malware, which has reportedly affected more than 50 crypto wallets.
In their operations, the hackers have used the fake Claude Opus 5 Free Desktop app to steal browser login passwords, documents, cookies, and messaging data.
According to the cybersecurity firm Morphisec, “RevStealer was previously distributed through GitHub repositories and sites related to video game cheats, but the most notable case is a fake project called Claude Opus 5 Free Desktop that impersonates the AI developer Anthropic and promises free access to Claude.”
Prior to the attack, the malware analyzes the target computer’s available memory, as well as the number of processor cores, hostname, username, and graphics hardware. If it exceeds these parameters, it stores itself under a random name and executes covertly.
