The new delegate for the restoration of relations between Venezuela and the International Monetary Fund is Álvaro Piris Chávarri.
“Piris has experience in managing financial crises and has led technical advisory visits to Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe. He is currently the head of mission for Ethiopia.”
The selection of the new delegate means that the IMF will conduct its first Article IV consultations in Venezuela since 2004; this document provides a detailed overview of the country’s economy and could unlock access to billions of dollars in frozen Special Drawing Rights (SDRs).
The organization’s interest in resuming relations with Venezuela has accelerated following the easing of sanctions by the United States government and the OFAC’s licenses in strategic sectors, such as oil and mining.
