Rajasthan tests first AI-powered traffic light

The new smart traffic light, incorporating AI, was launched in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It will help control traffic in real time, reduce congestion, and lower fuel consumption and emissions

A novel smart traffic light was launched in Rajasthan, India. It incorporates AI for real-time traffic monitoring using advanced cameras, which will help switch to green lights on the most congested routes and facilitate the flow of vehicles.

In addition to “adjusting the lights according to traffic in real time, it promises to reduce congestion, fuel consumption, and emissions.”

The project reached the testing stage after successfully completing four months of trials, according to News9. “Unlike traditional systems with fixed timings, this traffic light analyzes traffic in real time using high-quality cameras that count the vehicles in each lane. This allows it to automatically change the light to green on the most congested roads, clearing the flow of traffic in intervals of between 10 and 60 seconds.”

The innovation includes other key features, such as detecting people with weapons and automatically issuing tickets to drivers who are not wearing helmets or seatbelts.

In this regard, local authorities are evaluating expanding this system to other areas of the state in the near future.
