A seed bank will be created to secure genetic material for planting

Venezuela will create a Seed Bank to safeguard inputs and genetic material. The initiative is a joint effort with the Ministry of Science and Technology

The governor of Guárico state, Donald Donaire, signed an alliance to create a Seed Bank, which will be crucial for the upcoming winter season. The partners in this initiative are the Dr. Humberto Fernández Moran Agricultural Biotechnology Center, located in Caracas, and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The objective of this Seed Bank is “the recovery and conservation of seeds, as well as the country’s agricultural diversity, all in response to the genetic erosion caused by foreign agricultural practices.”

According to Donaire, this Bank will guarantee producers access to “quality genetic material, adapted to the local environment, thus ensuring the supply of food both regionally and nationally.”

It will also be a tool for safeguarding inputs for the South American country’s agri-food sector.
