Democrats and Republicans failed to reach an agreement on Tuesday night regarding funding for government programs and services, resulting in a government shutdown—the first since 2018

The United States woke up on Wednesday, October 1, to a government shutdown, the first since 2018, after Democrats and Republicans failed to reach an agreement on continued funding for government programs and services.

It is important to note that the government shutdown occurred because the Democratic Party in the Senate rejected a final Republican funding proposal.

With this measure, all “non-essential” activities of federal agencies, including offices dedicated to scientific research, are suspended. Furthermore, the salaries of thousands of employees are suspended, and key services to the public, such as transportation and healthcare, are disrupted.
