Elon Musk announces Grok 2.5 model open source

Elon Musk's 2.5 artificial intelligence model is now open source, and soon the Grok 3 model will be too

Mogul Elon Musk, owner of Tesla, SpaceX, and the social network X, revealed that his xAI platform has made the Grok 2.5 model public domain, and that Grok 3 is expected to become public domain in about six months.

“According to xAI, the Grok 2.5 model, which contains 42 files and occupies 500 GB, is now available for download on Hugging Face.” Following xAI’s instructions, developers can download the files and configure the SGlang inference engine and start the inference server with the tokenizer to run the model.

An important aspect is that the model “requires at least eight GPUs, each with more than 40 GB of video memory.”

Regarding the operating requirements, online developers have indicated that they are too high for most of them to run.

The open-source announcement of Grok 2.5 comes amid a scenario of strong competition with Chinese models, about which Musk confirmed in a post on his X account that “they represent a great challenge for them, beyond competition from Google.”
