The CEO of the technology company Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, announced last week that they will soon begin construction of Meta Superintelligence Labs, the leading social media company’s new unit for the development of artificial superintelligence.
Zuckerberg said on Monday, June 30: “As the pace of AI [artificial intelligence] progress accelerates, the development of superintelligence becomes more and more palpable. I believe this will usher in a new era for humanity, and I am fully committed to doing whatever it takes to help Meta lead the way.”
He explained that Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, and Nat Friedman, former CEO of GitHub, are now part of Meta’s staff, adding that “the first will be Director of AI and lead MSL, while the second will lead work on AI products and applied research.”
He also asserted that the company is currently uniquely positioned to bring superintelligence to the world: “We have a strong business that allows us to develop significantly more computing power than smaller labs.”
He emphasized Meta’s extensive experience in creating and developing products that reach billions of people, describing the brand as a pioneer and leader “in the rapidly growing AI eyewear and wearable category.”
