Vatican Library began tokenizing historical manuscripts

With the aim of preserving an invaluable collection of historical manuscripts, the Vatican Library began its tokenization using blockchain technology, taking a crucial step towards Web3

Blockchain technology arrived at the Vatican Library to make the leap to Web3 with the tokenization of the historical manuscripts kept there. This initiative will allow its preservation and legacy to be prolonged.

It is one of the oldest and most prestigious libraries in the world. It will now proceed to the digitization and accessibility of documents dating back centuries.

The library has confirmed that in the middle of this year, the “tokenization of 21 ancient manuscripts began, allowing these documents to be accessible in the digital world in a secure and verifiable manner. Using blockchain technology, each manuscript is represented as a non-fungible token (NFT), which guarantees its authenticity and provenance.”

The technique will not only provide greater protection to valuable documents, “but also democratizes global access to them. Now, scholars, researchers and history enthusiasts around the world can explore these texts without having to travel to Rome.”

Without a doubt, the measure constitutes an opening to new possibilities for education and historical research, bringing the knowledge stored in the manuscripts of the Vatican Library to more people.

This joint project between the Vatican Library and companies in the technology sector, particularly in the blockchain segment, has made possible the transition towards the digitization and tokenization of manuscripts.

They hope that in a short time, more of the collection can be included, demonstrating that “traditional institutions can take advantage of emerging technologies to preserve heritage and expand their reach. “This integration of old with new offers a model for other libraries and museums around the world to follow.”
