UN warns about human rights impact of AI development
UN High Commissioner Volker Türk urged member states on Monday to act together to minimize the human rights risks posed by the accelerated development of artificial intelligence. He warned that even the rights to life, food, and health are currently at risk
UN High Commissioner Volker Türk warned member states on Monday about the dangers to which all human rights are exposed due to the advancement of AI.
Türk stated in a press release that “all human rights are at risk, including the rights to life, food, privacy, health, and security,” referring to agentic AI, “which goes beyond conventional AI and can make its own decisions.”
Failures in this technology could cause disasters such as the paralysis of essential services, communication outages, and the destabilization of critical infrastructure, “striking at the very heart of democratic institutions.”
According to the official, control of AI should not rest in the hands of a single country or company. The High Commissioner insisted that the current challenge is how to match the pace of effective governance of this technology with the pace of its rapid development. Therefore, urgent measures are needed to prevent behaviors that jeopardize human rights, requiring a collaborative approach among all countries, as well as a code of conduct for AI models.
