Two new candidates nominated for UN Secretary-General

In addition to former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and Rafael Grossi, Rebeca Grynspan and Macky Sall have now entered the race for the position of UN Secretary-General

An announcement made Wednesday by the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, revealed two new candidates for the position of Secretary-General of the organization.

Now, in addition to Michelle Bachelet, nominated by Chile, Brazil, and Mexico, and Rafael Grossi, current Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, nominated by Argentina, Macky Sall, former President of Senegal, nominated by Burundi, current Chairperson of the African Union, and Rebeca Grynspan, nominated by Costa Rica, have entered the race.

The President of the United Nations General Assembly “revealed the format of the interactive dialogues with the candidates, scheduled for the week of April 20.” These dialogues will be structured around the three pillars of the United Nations: “peace and security, human rights, and development.”

Regarding the nominations, it was indicated that they must be submitted to the interactive dialogues in advance; no later than April 1, so that the candidates can participate.
