Tornado Cash co-founders face money laundering charges

Two of the founders of the Tornado Cash cryptocurrency mixer have been accused by the United States authorities of violating US sanctions and money laundering

The Tornado Casch crypto platform would have violated the sanctions imposed by the United States a year ago. Two of its co-founders have been accused of this crime and are charged with money laundering.

This Wednesday the charges against Roman Storm and Roman Semenov, of Tornado Cash, were known. “Both were charged with violating government sanctions, and laundering more than $1 billion in criminal proceeds.”

The United States authorities have determined that the activity of both “facilitated more than $1 billion in money laundering for Lazarus, a group of hackers financed by the North Korean government.”

The promoters of the cryptocurrency mixer, still in the knowledge that they were helping hackers and cyber scammers, continued to promote an exclusive privacy service.

Roman Storm was arrested this Wednesday in Washington to be brought before the courts. While Roman Semenov “received sanctions from the DOJ’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).”

Regarding the case, federal prosecutor Damian Williams has declared that the arrest and the indictments are a reminder that “money laundering through cryptocurrency transactions violates the law, and those who participate in such laundering will be prosecuted.”
