The United States sets a deadline for Venezuela to qualify candidates and release political prisoners

Considering the guidelines of the recent Barbados agreement between the ruling party and the opposition, the United States has warned Venezuela that November 30 is the deadline to qualify candidates for the presidential elections and release political prisoners. Otherwise it will reimpose the recently lifted sanctions

Venezuela has a deadline from the United States to qualify the candidates for the 2024 presidential elections, in addition to releasing political prisoners, as established in the Barbados agreement.

Joe Biden has warned, through his advisor for Latin America, Juan González: “Before the end of November we have to see a process for the rehabilitation of all the candidates, including María Corina Machado, (…) Venezuelans are the ones to decide who will be their leaders.”

Biden’s spokesperson added that there is also hope that the Americans “unjustly detained” in the South American nation will be released.

During the meeting held by representatives of the Venezuelan ruling party and opposition in Barbados on October 17, conditions were established that led to the relief of sanctions by the United States. However, if Venezuela does not comply by November 30, Biden could reverse the relaxation of sanctions.

González told NTN24: “We have to see results to show that this first step is successful. We have taken a fairly big step to send the signal of our commitment, but after November 30, if those expectations are not met, we will have to take steps to dismantle the sanctions’ relief that we have given.”

This means that if Venezuela does not qualify all the candidates for the 2024 presidential elections and does not release the political prisoners, the United States decision would be reversed.
