The UN Security Council selected new non-permanent members
During the secret ballot for seats on the UN Security Council for non-permanent members, Germany lost its seat, while Portugal and Austria gained seats; Zimbabwe was selected to represent Africa; Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe are non-permanent members; and the Philippines was elected to represent Asia and the Pacific
A new scenario is emerging on the UN Security Council following the organization’s secret ballot for non-permanent members. Germany, despite being the largest economy in Europe, lost its seat to Austria and Portugal for the region.
Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe were elected as non-permanent member states for Latin America and the Caribbean for the 2027-2028 term.
To understand how the election of seats works, the allocation by region is detailed below: one country from the African group, one country from the Latin American and Caribbean group, one country from the Asia-Pacific group, two countries from the Western European group, and other states.
The rule stipulates that to be elected members, nations need the support of two-thirds of the General Assembly, which in this case comprises 127 countries.
