Spotify prepares AI feature to create custom remixes

The launch of Spotify's new tool for creating custom versions of songs is planned for 2027

In 2027, Spotify could launch a new AI-powered feature that will allow users to transform songs in its catalogue, creating custom versions.

Data from a Financial Times report indicates that the new feature “could arrive in 2027 as an additional service for subscribers. Before then, however, the company will have to resolve commercial aspects and obtain permissions from those who hold the rights to the music.”

With this tool, users will have the possibility of “taking a folk composition towards a dance sound or trying other variations.” It could also include the function of generating “performances with voices similar to those of other artists, an option that is particularly sensitive due to the legal implications and the necessary consent.”

Spotify is considering making it a paid tool, with an additional cost of four to five dollars per month to enable AI features.

On the legal front, it is reported that Spotify has already “reached agreements with Universal Music Group, Merlin, Kobalt, and Believe, although it still needs to negotiate with Sony and Warner Music.”

It is important to clarify that without the necessary permissions, the catalogue available for creating remixes could remain limited to certain songs. The platform envisions allowing each artist to choose whether to participate. Currently, it’s working on “convincing artists through a revenue-sharing mechanism,” considering that plays of AI-generated versions “could also be counted towards the original song and generate royalties for its owners.”
