Peru installs the first seismic alarm aystem in Latin America

The investment is 51 million 373 thousand 527 soles, local currency, and will have more than 100 electronic sirens

Peru has become a pioneer country in installing a Seismic Alarm Systems (SASPE) in the Latin American region. The national project, similar to the one installed in Japan and Mexico, represents an investment of 51 million 373 thousand 527 soles, the local currency.

The project includes studies, acquisition and installation of 100 accelerometric stations, 12 information processing centers, 12 control centers, 29 intermediate base stations and 114 electronic sirens.

Engineer Miguel Yamazaki Koizumi, Director of Preparation of the National Civil Defense Institute (INDECI), one of the companies promoting the project, assures that this system is extremely important for the country because its geographical location concentrates 85 % of activity seismic in the world.

What is the Saspe?

According to the Koizumi explanation, the early warning system allows the population to be warned of any seismic movement that exceeds 6 degrees, facilitating the residents to respond adequately to the emergency. The project is expected to benefit 10 coastal regions, including the Constitutional Province of Callao, and it is estimated that in the first phase it will benefit more than 1,500,000 Peruvians.

Both INDECI and the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) will be in charge of managing said project. The IGP assumed the responsibility of installing 106 accelerometers, 10 regional nodes that will process the information and issue the seismic alarm to 12 control centers. In the case of INDECI, 114 electronic sirens, 12 management and control centers will be installed, as well as the dissemination of the alarm and preparing the population for any emergency.
