The increase in measles cases in the Americas led the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to issue an epidemiological alert urging countries to increase vaccination rates.
So far in 2026, 47,500 cases of measles have been confirmed in 16 countries, with 44 deaths in three countries. PAHO noted last Saturday that cases have tripled compared to last year.
On the other hand, in a statement, the organization warned that “the Americas are registering the highest number of measles cases in more than two decades,” with 95 % of confirmed cases in Guatemala, Mexico, the United States, and Peru.
The assessment indicates that the public health risk associated with the disease in the Americas is classified as very high. Therefore, the PAHO “warns of increased mortality, the emergence of cases in new areas due to international travel and mass gatherings, and the impact on populations without access to health services.”
