New York suspends the city’s right-to-shelter rule for asylum seekers

Mayor Eric Adams signed an executive order suspending legislation allowing families seeking asylum to be resettled in shelters

New York Mayor Eric Adams signed an executive order temporarily suspending legislation that allows families seeking asylum to be resettled in shelters, a move that comes amid the potential collapse of the US immigration system due to the end of Title 42.

“This has not been a decision taken lightly, and we will do everything possible to resettle asylum seekers as soon as possible, as we have done since day one”, spokesman Fabien Levy said in a statement.

In this sense, Levy specified that, thanks to the efforts of the mayor’s office, no asylum-seeking family “has slept on the street” in the city “in the last year”. “Without increased federal and state support, we are concerned that the worst is yet to come,” he added.

The order, signed on Wednesday night, has already gone into effect and will be in effect for five days, unless it is repealed. This movement by the New York authorities, criticized by local NGOs, occurs before the end of Title 42, one of the most controversial immigration policies of the stage of former President Donald Trump, which will expire at midnight this Thursday.

“This long-standing (New York asylum) law has allowed people in need to be treated humanely. Mayor Adams is treading on delicate ground”, the NGO Legal Aid Society said in a statement.

Title 42, which will cease to be in force as of Thursday, is a public health provision, promoted by the previous US Administration, which authorizes the collective expulsion of any migrant and asylum seeker who tries to cross the land borders of the United States without an individual assessment of their circumstances and protection needs.
