Meta works on a decentralized content application

The company is developing a text-based application with support for ActivityPub

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is working on a new standalone app that will focus on text-based content and will be compatible with ActivityPub, the decentralized social networking protocol that powered Mastodon and other apps that compete with Twitter.

As reported by TechCrunch, this new app, known internally as P92 and branded as Instagram, will allow users to sign in with their Instagram credentials. In the first version, the team will use Instagram profile data such as name, username, bio, profile photo, and followers.

The app will comply with the company’s privacy policy, although it will also have its own additional policies and terms of service that will specifically address the sharing of data between apps.

Tech companies and startups have been racing to attract Twitter users looking for new platforms. In recent months, several rival platforms, such as Mastodon, Post.news, and T2, have emerged or gained ground in this market.
