WhatsApp arrived in Spain more than a decade ago. The first year was free, and then an annual fee of €0.89 was charged. In 2016, the subscription was eliminated. But the paid plan could return to avoid the ads that Meta wants to include in Status and Channels.
This would be the first change to the instant messaging application in Spain in ten years. In this regard, it is known that “the ads will not appear within private chats, which will continue to be end-to-end encrypted, but in the more social spaces of the platform, similar to Instagram Stories or broadcast channels.”
In order to align with European regulations, “Meta will enable an alternative: a monthly subscription that will allow the use of WhatsApp without ads in Status and Channels.”
This option has already been detected in WhatsApp beta version 2.26.3.9 for Android, according to reports from specialized media outlets such as WaBetaInfo, which indicates a first phase of the subscription in the European Union and the United Kingdom. The fee would be around €4 per month.
