Through a resolution of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), the date to elect Luis Almagro’s successor was set for March 10, 2025.
The organization announced that member countries “must present their candidacies in writing on February 3.” On March 10, an extraordinary session will be held to select Almagro’s successor, whose term as Secretary General ends on May 25.
For February 10, “a session is planned for the candidates to present their proposals and initiatives in detail to the member states and the following day to civil society.”
It was learned that Suriname and Paraguay will nominate their foreign ministers, Albert Ramdin and Rubén Ramírez, respectively.
During another extraordinary session, scheduled for May 5, 2025, “the member countries of the OAS will elect the deputy secretary general, a position currently occupied by Néstor Méndez.”
