Laura Fernández is the new president of Costa Rica, after sweeping the first round of the electoral process. She has the support of US President Donald Trump and will begin her term on May 8.

In her victory speech, Fernández mentioned key concepts for the transformation of the country, such as “profound and irreversible change,” “third republic,” as well as “dialogue and reconciliation.”

The 39-year-old political scientist, from the Sovereign People’s Party, won with more than 48 % of the vote, thus securing the presidential victory. His party also won 30 of the 57 seats in Parliament.
