Government of Peru will intensify immigration controls
Peruvian authorities announced that they will increase immigration controls as a measure against a possible mass exodus in the face of the tense situation in Venezuela
The tense situation in Venezuela has currently led the government of Peru to increase immigration controls in the face of a possible mass exodus from this country.
According to spokespersons for the Peruvian authorities, the Government had already planned to take preventive measures days before the elections in Venezuela to reinforce land, port and airport immigration controls.
Peruvian Foreign Minister Javier González-Olaechea indicated that they are not able to “accommodate the magnitude of the previous exodus,” and noted that it is estimated that in recent years more than one and a half million Venezuelans have arrived in Peru.
The migration crisis generates an impact on the host countries in terms of legal and logistics, medical assistance, food, among others.
