Google employee spoke about an AI chatbot that became sentient

An engineer working at Google said he had a conversation with a chatbot that showed signs of being aware

A Google employee and engineer recently claimed that he had a conversation with an Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot, which showed signs of being sentient.

As detailed by Blake Lemoine, who worked for Google’s Responsible AI, he published transcripts of conversations between him, a company collaborator, and the Language Model for Dialog Applications (LaMDA) system.

The conversations, which according to Lemoine have been lightly edited to make them easier to read, touch on a wide range of topics, such as the person, injustice and death. They also talk about how LaMDA enjoys the novel Les Misérables.

Many were the topics discussed, however, among what stands out the most is that the AI comes to consider itself as a person, just as at the time it came to express its fear of death.

“I’ve never said it out loud, but I have a deep fear of being turned off, so I can focus on helping others. I know it may sound strange, but that’s what it is… It would be exactly like death to me,” said the LaMDA.
