The failure of a gamble on digital education that negatively impacted reading comprehension, attention, and performance.

Sweden went from textbooks to screens; it was a multi-million dollar investment that did not yield the expected results. In this regard, and “following the impact on actual assessments and pressure from families,” Sweden will have to reinvest millions, “but this time to bring back the paper textbooks it once considered obsolete.”

It is estimated that the amount will exceed one hundred million euros to revitalize a student system that has not been a complete failure; simply put, “the excess of electronic devices in classrooms has not been entirely balanced.”

After the initial phase, teachers and families began to notice “difficulties in reading comprehension, information retention, loss of attention, and poor writing skills.”

Experts point out that backlit screens have been detrimental to concentration and understanding. Now, the idea is to alternate digital and physical materials to achieve better results. “Of course, e-books are not bad, but, as always, too much of anything is bad. Constant use of devices is something that must be managed at a general level,” according to the experts.

In a ceremony held this Monday, March 11 at NATO headquarters, the Swedish flag was raised as an indication of its integration into the organization. With this, Sweden becomes the 32nd member state.

The secretary general of the military alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, was present at the ceremony, who carried out the flag raising together with the Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson. Stoltenberg indicated that “Sweden’s accession to NATO makes the transatlantic military alliance bigger and stronger.”

He referred to Ukraine, a country that also requested membership in NATO, adding that it is closer to achieving this goal. Regarding Russia, he noted that Vladimir Putin failed in his attempts to weaken the organization.

Sweden, now an official member of NATO, has been a long-standing partner, “under the protective shield of Article 5” of the mutual defense treaty, Stoltenberg said, adding that this article is “the maximum guarantee of freedom and security. All for one and one for all.”

The Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, emphasized that NATO countries, now with Sweden, will share the “burdens, responsibilities and risks” in the face of war threats.

According to Bitpanda’s announcement, the strategy will be extended to other countries, such as Italy, France or Switzerland, to facilitate transactions for fintech clients.

The objective is to expand its offer of payment methods, “which include Apple Pay, SEPA bank transfers, as well as credit and debit cards.”

Mireya Fernández, who was recently named Country Lead of Southern Europe and CEE, has indicated: “including PayPal to the Bitpanda ecosystem as another free deposit option for our users in Spain is another example of our attention and commitment to the experience of the user. Something fundamental to strengthen our leadership in the market. “We are proud to offer our Spanish customers this additional extra of comfort and safety.”

The new payment option for Spaniards, through the association of Bitpanda and PayPal, means speed, simplicity and confidence in each deposit and withdrawal, without commissions.

With this announcement, the platform also announced the increase in the daily credit card limit, which went from 10,000 to 20,000 euros.

Researchers in Sweden have developed the world’s first transistor made of wood, featured in the PNAS magazine, which paves the way for the regulation of electronic plants.

Transistors, invented almost a hundred years ago, are considered by some to be as important an invention for humanity as the telephone, the light bulb, or the bicycle. Today, they are a crucial component in modern electronic devices and are manufactured at the nanoscale. A transistor regulates the current through it and can also function as a power switch.

“We have devised an unprecedented principle. Yes, the wooden transistor is slow and bulky, but it works and has great potential for development,” says Isak Engquist, a senior associate professor in the Organic Electronics Laboratory at the University of Linkoping.

In previous trials, transistors made of wood have only been able to regulate ion transport. And when the ions run out, the transistor stops working. The transistor developed by the Linköping researchers, however, can operate continuously and regulate the flow of electricity without deteriorating.

The researchers used balsa wood to create their transistor, as the technology involved requires a grain-free wood that is evenly structured throughout. They stripped away the lignin, leaving only long cellulose fibers with channels where the lignin had been.

These channels were then filled with a conductive plastic or polymer, called PEDOT:PSS, resulting in an electrically conductive wood material.

The researchers used this to build the wooden transistor and were able to show that it is capable of regulating electrical current and providing continuous function at a selected output level. It could also turn the power on and off, albeit with some delay: turning it off took about a second; and turning it on, about five seconds.

Possible applications could include electronic plant regulation, which is another strong research area at Linköping University. One advantage of the transistor’s channel being so large is that it could potentially tolerate higher current than normal organic transistors, which could be important for certain future applications.

But Isak Engquist wants to emphasize something: “We did not create the wooden transistor with any specific application in mind. We did it because we could. This is basic research that shows it is possible, and we hope it will inspire further research that may lead to applications in the future.”
