Google clarified that Gmail will continue to operate and will not close, refuting rumors that surfaced after a supposed viral statement on social media claimed otherwise.

X developer Chris Bakke shared on his personal profile a seemingly official statement announcing that Gmail was “coming to its end.”

According to this message, as of August 1, 2024, Gmail would officially stop working, which would mean that sending, receiving or storing emails would not be allowed.

However, Google confirmed that this post is satirical and false. Gmail accounts will remain accessible and users will be able to access and download their emails as usual. The tech company has reiterated that Gmail is here to stay.

Thailand has decided to require an injunction to shut down Facebook if it fails to effectively address misleading investment ads and cryptocurrency scams on its platform.

On Aug. 21, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) reported that more than 200,000 people were notably misled by Facebook ads promoting cryptocurrency scams, investments in fictitious companies, and fake government entities, such as the Stock Exchange Commission and Values.

Among the most common schemes used by scammers were cryptocurrency investment and business fraud, according to MDES. Some ads apparently used images of famous personalities and well-known financial figures, offering promises of up to 30 % daily profit, with the purpose of luring people into scams.

Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn, the MDES minister, said that the ministry had held talks with the Meta platform and had sent a letter to it in this regard, however, he stated that it does not exercise control over advertisers.

The Ministry is amassing evidence of the fraudulent advertisements, which, according to his statement, number a considerable 5,300. Later this month, he is set to formally petition the court to shut down Facebook within seven days.

The Ministry alerted about the modus operandi of these scams, emphasizing that consumers must be careful when faced with promises of high and guaranteed returns, as well as with advertisements that use images of famous people.

The Japanese car manufacturing company Toyota announced that from March 22 to 31 it will halt production of one of its domestic lines as a result of a shortage of chips, which could be a new blow to its manufacturing.

The decision was published through a statement in which the company indicates that one of the “two production lines of its Fujimatsu plant, in the center of the archipelago, will remain stopped”. They stressed that the recent and repeated production adjustments are consequence of the “shortage of component” derived from the Covid-19 pandemic”.

The Japanese car manufacturer made the announcement just one day after the production stoppage was known, until further notice, at the facilities located in the Chinese city of Changchun, where a new epidemic outbreak was discovered last Friday that forced the authorities to order the confinement of the 9 million people who inhabit the city.

Toyota to reduce production from April

The production of the Japanese manufacturer has been quite affected by the constant epidemiological outbreaks in Asian countries that have impacted the “component supply chain, especially semiconductors.”

Another factor that impacted the company’s production was the cyberattack to one of its suppliers that affected the platform for ordering and delivering components that forced the company to close all its national plants on March 1st. Since January the company has intermittently suspended production on several of its 28 production lines at 14 plants located in Japan and abroad.

The company informed its suppliers of the decision to cut planned national production by 20%, starting in April, in order to support suppliers that are experiencing difficulties. However, the company plans to produce 11 million vehicles until March 2023.
