Brazil passed Law 15.345/2026 to allow acupuncture services in the emergency rooms of public hospitals, becoming the first country in the region to include Chinese medicine in its healthcare facilities.

This measure positions the South American country as a “global leader by institutionalizing Traditional Chinese Medicine in private practices and the emergency rooms of its public hospitals. An ancient technique that may be the modern answer to health.”

Dr. Márcia Yamamura, head of acupuncture at Hospital São Paulo, indicated that the health center already offers three levels of care: primary, secondary, and tertiary. These are highly complex services where “primary care patients come to our emergency room.”

The hospital also functions as a “specialized care center, since acupuncture is a recognized medical specialty in Brazil. Finally, those highly complex patients already being treated at Hospital São Paulo also come here to receive their acupuncture treatments.”

Benefits of Acupuncture

The specialist emphasized that acupuncture primarily addresses chronic pain. In this regard, “patients prefer to come here first to alleviate their acute episodes and gradually reduce their medication use.”

Many people suffer from persistent pain and then experience side effects from medications without finding relief.

Between 60 and 80 patients visit Hospital São Paulo daily seeking a better quality of life, which acupuncture provides almost immediately. Thanks to the exchange of knowledge and cooperation between China and Brazil, this ancient medicine is now accessible to those most in need.

With this fund, it will provide financial support “to academic and non-profit organizations around the world that are using AI to address increasingly complex problems at the intersections of different scientific disciplines.”

Maggie Johnson, vice president and director of Google.org, indicated that she will work with internal leaders from Google DeepMind, Google Research, as well as other AI-focused teams and external experts to identify and announce organizations.

She added that they will provide $2 million in Google Cloud credits “for all organizations and free technical expertise from Googlers.”

Neuralink performed a new brain chip implant in a second patient, according to Elon Musk, owner of the startup, who added that by the end of this year it will carry out eight additional trials.

According to information about this new implant, the Musk-owned company “is currently testing its brain chip implants, which are designed to help people with spinal cord injuries regain some autonomy.”

The first implant was carried out at the end of January 2024 in patient Noland Arbaugh, a 29-year-old quadriplegic.

This Sunday, the new device from Elon Musk’s company Neuralink, called Telepathy, was implanted for the first time in a human.

Musk indicated this Sunday on his account on the social network X that the patient was recovering satisfactorily. Likewise, he stated that the brain chip will help patients who have lost the mobility of their limbs, by sending signals to and from the brain.

Telepathy is an extremely small, non-intrusive, hair-sized chip made up of 1,024 electrodes that uses wireless technology to transmit signals in real time.

This is the surgical intervention for the chip implantation, just nine months after Neuralink obtained permission from the authorities in the United States.

As detailed by Musk, “the function of the chip will be to ‘read’ neuronal activity and help restore brain functions that have been damaged as a result of a heart attack or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,” among others.

Two students from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) on the master’s degree in Bioinformatics and Biostatistics have developed a mobile application capable of detecting in just a few seconds if a person has a hidden disease that causes blindness.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), some 2.2 billion people on the planet suffer from some type of visual impairment or blindness, and half of these cases could have been prevented by early diagnosis.

To solve this problem, UOC students have devised a project, which is called begIA, and which allows, for example, to find out if a patient with glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy or cataracts can lead to a total loss of vision through a selfie.

An Artificial Intelligence (AI) analyzes this photograph and issues a diagnosis that, if positive, channels the person who has undergone it to the specialist that best suits their needs. Specifically, begIA is based on a neural network algorithm capable of recognizing in a frontal image of a person’s face taken with a mobile phone, using deep learning techniques, if they have an eye disease.

According to the students who have developed begIA, it arose from a personal experience, after a family member with type 2 diabetes began to lose a lot of vision and that even led him to stop driving and reading. “He developed diabetic retinopathy, an eye disease that causes loss of vision and the incidence of which can be reduced through early diagnosis”, commented these creators, Igor García Atutxa and Francisca Villanueva.

In addition to the early diagnosis of ophthalmological diseases, with begIA professionals can carry out medical monitoring from a distance since, once the correct treatment for each patient has been determined, they can continue to see its effectiveness and the evolution of the pathology through these photographs. In this way, the patient avoids traveling to the health center for examination.

From this institution, they remember that the early diagnosis of ocular diseases requires an examination of the fundus of the eye, which implies that there must be an ophthalmology specialist who had the necessary optical instruments.

The German Council of Ethics emphasized on Monday that Artificial Intelligence (AI) should not replace humans and ruled in favor of placing strict limits on its use.

“Artificial intelligence should enhance human development and not diminish it,” said the president of the German Ethics Council, Alena Buyx, presenting the statement “Humans and machines – Challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence”.

The German Ethics Council is an independent body that deals with ethical issues and challenges in the field of natural sciences, medicine and health. The 26 members that make it up are appointed by the president of the Bundestag (Lower House of Parliament). Both Parliament and the federal government can commission the Ethics Council to advise on certain issues.

The council indicated that in the case of the medical sector, AI could be useful, for example, to alleviate care bottlenecks due to staff shortages and to make more accurate diagnoses.

However, he stressed that in the development and use of AI products, the loss of medical competence must be avoided and that the privacy of patients must be reconciled with the intensive use of data in medical research.

In addition, he warned that for the use of Artificial Intelligence in public administration, it is important to protect citizens from discrimination. He pointed out that the recommendations of the machines should not be followed blindly and the consideration of each case and the rights of inspection and objection of those affected must be guaranteed.

“AI applications cannot replace human intelligence, responsibility and evaluation,” said Julian Nida-Rümelin, vice president of the German Ethics Council.
