The problem affects the vehicle’s battery contact, an electromagnetic component that functions as a switch for high-power electrical circuits, which can overheat.

Overheating of this key battery component can cause electric vehicles to suddenly and completely lose power while on the road.

Ford detected the defect in 2022 and issued a recall in June of that year to fix the problem with a software update that lowers the voltage if contactor temperatures rise.

The company also later replaced a battery component.

But the US National Highway Safety Administration. (NHTSA, for its acronym in English) published on its website on Monday the opening of an investigation into the recall after receiving 12 complaints from owners of the Mustang Mach- E that the problem persists.

The affected vehicles were produced between May 2020 and May 2022 at Ford’s assembly plant in the Mexican town of Cuautitlán.

Production is scheduled to start in 2026 and the company plans to employ 2,500 people at the facility, which will be owned by a 100% Ford subsidiary and will be called BlueOval Battery Park Michigan.

The new plant will add about 35 gigawatt hours a year of battery production capacity to Ford in the United States, which, according to its calculations, will be enough to produce approximately 400,000 electric vehicles a year.

In this sense, the North American company has reported that it has reached an agreement with the Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL) through which the production of the new plant will use “the knowledge and services of battery cells LFP” of the Asian firm.

Ford will offer customers a second battery technology as it also produces nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries. According to the American firm, this “will allow Ford customers to choose an electric vehicle with battery performance characteristics more aligned with their needs.” LFP batteries are “very durable” and tolerate more frequent and faster charging, in addition to using “fewer high-demand and cost-intensive materials,” they have indicated.

“This low-cost, at-scale battery will help Ford contain or even further reduce EV prices. These LFP batteries will power a variety of affordable Ford 100 % electric cars and trucks, most of which will be assembled in United States”.

With this new investment of 3,500 million dollars, Ford has committed a total of 17,600 million dollars (16,367 million euros) for the production of electric vehicles and batteries in the United States since 2019. This is part of its commitment to invest around of 50,000 million dollars (46,497 million euros) in electric vehicles worldwide until 2026.

“In the next three years these investments will generate more than 18,000 direct jobs in Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio and Missouri (towns in the United States) and more than 100,000 indirect jobs,” the company highlighted.

The news was announced to the workers by the company’s president, Bill Ford, as well as the CEO, Jim Farley. This measure is part of the plan known as Ford +.

According to the content of the statement sent to employees in the three countries, the internal restructuring implies the need to “modify the use of Ford’s resources as well as its ‘cost structure’, which is not competitive with traditional rivals and new”.

From Ford they argue that with the elimination of jobs in the coming weeks they seek to simplify functions and face the increase in inflation.

The proposal is based on the technology known as ‘Head-up displays’ or frontal display, a system that projects relevant information for the driver in his field of vision on the windshield, or on a secondary panel.

This system seeks to prevent the driver from taking his eyes off the road to consult information relevant to the journey, such as directions or fuel level. Now Ford engineers want to move it to the headlights.

The new technology would use high-resolution headlights to project information on the asphalt, this time to improve driving and nighttime attention, especially on poorly lit roads.

Specifically, it could project information about weather changes, such as snowfall, fog, slippery surfaces or an icy road ahead, indicate the next turns or show the width of the vehicle on the road, as detailed from Ford in a statement.

The CEO of Qualcomm, Cristiano Amon, presented the economic results of the company last Friday and warned of a marked shortage “in all areas”, as the analyst Bloomberg has collected.

This lack of supply originates from the manufacturing industry’s dependence on a small number of semiconductor suppliers from Asia, especially Taiwan, such as TSMC, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.

Currently, the high demand for processors by technology companies, such as mobile manufacturers, is already causing supply problems for other manufacturers such as vehicle manufacturers, which reduced their demand with the onset of the pandemic and are now experiencing difficulties to get components.

The global shortage of semiconductors is among the causes of a 20 % reduction in the production of several General Motors and Ford plants in the United States, announced by the American company this month. However, the lack of supplies may also affect the rest of the manufacturing industries, beyond vehicles, as warned by companies in the sector such as the European NXP Semiconductors NV and Infineon Technologies AG.

The company said that despite the production stoppage in the South American country, its product development center will continue to work in the state of Bahia, as well as its test center in Tatuí and its regional headquarters in Sao Paulo.

Do not affect work processes in other places in Latin America

The corporation plans to produce pre-tax charges of about $ 4.1 billion, of which $ 2.5 billion will be reflected in last year’s accounts and the remaining $ 1.6 billion will be paid in cash in 2021.

For the moment, the immediate cessation of production will be in the Camacari and Taubaté regions, but in the manufacture of some parts it will be maintained for a few months to support inventories.

The Troller plant in Horizonte, Brazil, will continue to operate until the fourth quarter of this year. Among other things, Ford will complete the development of the EcoSport, Ka and T4 models after selling off the inventories.

This will not affect the work processes in Argentina, Uruguay and the other South American market sales companies.

They argue that they are important and necessary decisions

Ford president and CEO Jim Farley emphasized that, “with more than a century in South America and Brazil, we know that these are very difficult actions, but necessary, to create a healthy and sustainable business.”

The firm assured that it will work in strong cooperation with its unions and other stakeholders to develop an equitable and balanced method to mitigate the impacts of the production halt.

Meanwhile the president of Ford South America, Lyle Watters, highlighted the work of the South American team of the company, which reached “a significant process” in terms of the restructuring of operations, including the progressive elimination of unprofitable products and the discarding heavy trucks from the business.
