According to Venezuelan Minister of Health Nuramy Gutiérrez, the memorandum of understanding “will allow the signing of other agreements that facilitate the arrival of medicines and other health supplies from India, which are not only of very high quality, but have also been released from patents, therefore the international prices end up being very attractive.”

The official also highlighted that the exchange of technical information on drug regulation between the two nations is planned.

The document was signed by the Venezuelan Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission. In this regard, the Indian Ambassador to Venezuela, Ashkbarbabu Puluyadikumaran, emphasized that this initiative will give the government of Delcy Rodríguez “the possibility of accessing very high-quality medicines at very low cost, which will also strengthen the relationship between both nations in various areas of health.”

The appointment has been at the IDB headquarters in Washington, where the delegates who have participated in person and by videoconference have elected Goldfajn for a five-year term.

Goldfajn will thus be responsible for the operations and administration of the Bank, which works with the public sector in Latin America and the Caribbean. He will also chair the Board of Executive Directors of the IDB and the Executive Board of IDB Invest, which works with the private sector in the region. The president will also lead the Donors Committee of the IDB Lab, the Bank’s laboratory for innovative development projects.

The Brazilian has achieved, in accordance with internal regulations, the majority of the votes of the IDB member countries, as well as the support of at least 15 of the 28 regional member countries (26 borrowing member countries, plus Canada and the United States). The IDB has a total of 48 member countries and offices in all borrowing countries, as well as in Europe and Asia.

The Board of Governors is the highest authority of the Bank. Each member country appoints a governor, whose voting power is proportional to the capital of the bank subscribed by his country. Governors are usually finance ministers, central bank presidents, or other authorities.

The Board of Governors holds annual meetings to review the Bank’s operations and make key decisions. It also occasionally holds extraordinary meetings, including to elect a president.

Goldfajn will be the seventh president of the IDB after the Honduran Queen Irene Mejía Chacón (2022); the American Mauricio Claver-Carone (2020-2022); the Colombian Luis Alberto Moreno (2005-2020); the Spanish-Uruguayan Enrique V. Iglesias (1988-2005); the Mexican Antonio Ortiz Mena (1971-1988) and the Chilean Felipe Herrera (1960-1971).
