Global food prices registered a 1.9 % increase, according to recent data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

According to the organization, this is “a larger increase than that recorded in July, of 0.6 %. Compared to August 2015, the global price of food rose 2.5 % year-on-year.”

Regarding this indicator, FAO Chief Economist Máximo Torero noted that it serves as a warning that the risk premium is returning to food markets, referring to factors such as the climate crisis, geopolitical tensions, and disruptions in trade logistics converging to adjust supply expectations.

The increase in global food prices has also been attributed to the drought caused by the European summer and the rising cost of fertilizers. Specifically, sugar showed an 11.9 % increase; wheat rose 15 % compared to the previous year; and poultry, rice, and oil also registered price increases.

On the other hand, “corn did not show significant variations, with prospects for lower yields in the US and Europe due to the cost of fertilizers; beef prices fell after China imposed import quotas.”

This year was framed in a context of numerous challenges, including the pandemic, international conflicts, the rise in food and input prices, and the impacts of climate change.

World Food Day made a call to close these gaps and guarantee the right to food through collective action. Leave no one behind in efforts to transform food systems, to make them more inclusive, efficient and sustainable. Governments, the private sector, academia, civil society, everyone has a role in this process.

In Venezuela, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP) work together with other actors to strengthen agri-food and social protection systems, provide food assistance to those who need it most and promote the resilience of the most vulnerable populations.

On World Food Day 2022, all the people who make these interventions and programs possible in Venezuela were recognized. School staff and representatives who are at the center of the school meals program, small-scale farmers who contribute to those programs with fresh food, and who seek creative solutions to everyday challenges. Their stories, ideas, and resilience inspire and fuel the United Nations’ commitment to Venezuelans, especially those who need it most.

Food Week concludes with a concert in Chacao

Due to its importance, it was conducive to make a call for reflection and awareness. That is why in our country, the United Nations organized the Food Week, in which the webinar “School feeding: let’s build together, a sustainable future” was held, squares were lit, the Healthy and Sustainable Food Fair was also held, and the closing activity will be this Thursday, October 20, with the Symphonic Concert, by the Chacao Youth Orchestra, at the National Center for Social Action for Music.

Such activities are pertinent for each one of us to feel like active collaborators in the fight against hunger and any type of malnutrition; and to encourage healthy and sustainable diets.

This October 16 marks International Food Day. This year’s slogan, “Leave no one behind”, encompasses the UN’s commitment, in more than 150 countries, to carry out sustainable programs in this area and guarantee the health and well-being of each individual.

The complete motto expresses: “Leave no one behind. Better production, better nutrition, better environment and a better life for all” supports the agenda of events of the United Nations System in Venezuela, focused on “promoting responsible food consumption, and the role of healthy diets as development opportunities for especially vulnerable populations.

According to Alewis Bonte, FAO representative in Venezuela, this date is celebrated with precisely those who cannot do so. “That’s why we talk about leaving no one behind. We must not forget that there are those who live in isolated areas or areas of extreme poverty”, he pointed out.

Bonte stressed that the transformation of agri-food systems “is essential so that healthy diets are less expensive, and reach the largest number of people” and added that together with partners and actors, they seek to offer “options so as not to leave anyone behind We provide support to boost agri-food production, since Venezuela has all the potential to feed its population.”

Likewise, Laura Melo, WFP representative in Venezuela, highlighted the importance of this day to give due recognition to the work in remote and highly vulnerable populations in Venezuela.

“When there is sufficient, available and quality food in homes, there are boys and girls with better learning, better opportunities to develop their potential, and individuals and families with the ability to build their own future,” Melo said.

Calendar of activities in Caracas

In the Venezuelan capital city, it is planned to commemorate the WFD with the Healthy and Sustainable Food Fair, in the Parque del Este, this Saturday, October 15, starting at 10:00 in the morning. There, families will have the opportunity to interact from a playful and dynamic learning perspective.

Other planned activities are webinars and a concert by the Chacao Youth Orchestra that will be held at the Social Action Center for Music on October 18 and 20, respectively.

Other UN agencies in Venezuela will participate in this celebration, which will serve as a preamble to the commemoration of United Nations Day, a date of great relevance for the entire Organization System in Venezuela, on October 23.
