Currently, criminals are accelerating data extraction through advanced machine learning models, turning cybercrime or fraud into a systematic process that no longer depends on chance. Faced with this reality, citizens must evolve from spectators to protected users.

Carlos López, support and training manager at ESET Venezuela, warns that the human factor remains the most critical point. “Of every ten news stories circulating, eight are fake. We must remain vigilant and constantly investigate, as the foundation of every cyberattack is social engineering.”

The value of “corporate gold”

Although technology changes, the attack vector remains: “They seek to manipulate the user into participating in their game,” López points out. Phishing through emails, links, and messages with tempting offers continues to be the primary method for capturing personal data through a single mistaken click.

In the corporate environment, global interconnectedness demands a strategic vision. López emphasizes that the landscape has definitively changed with the post-pandemic virtual acceleration. “Organizations must prioritize cybersecurity when managing payroll, cloud services, and vendors. Once the damage occurs, it is irreversible,” the ESET representative asserted.

Legislative challenges and critical digital prevention measures

“In Venezuela, it is imperative to move towards data protection legislation. If you contract a service, the company must be responsible for the integrity of that information, which represents the company’s most valuable asset. The theft of IT assets not only fuels cybercrime but can also benefit larger-scale criminal organizations.”

To avoid becoming a victim of scams, the recommendation is to always be skeptical and implement technological controls. Protecting devices and using two-factor authentication are fundamental measures, since compromising initial access is always the attacker’s primary objective.

On the eve of 2026, Unión Radio interviewed Rafael Núñez Aponte, in his capacity as an expert on the subject; the dialogue revealed the relationship between the rise of e-commerce and cyberattacks in Venezuela, both for seasonal reasons and in general.

E-commerce in Venezuela has seen a 95% growth, which is actually a very positive thing, but the phenomenon has been exploited for negative purposes by cybercriminals, who have triggered a proportional increase in cyber-attack cases.

Rafael Núñez, director of MásQueSeguridad and a cybersecurity specialist, explained that this high traffic creates more opportunities for cybercrime, as it uses this flow to spread malware and steal data.

According to the expert, Venezuela’s position on the international geopolitical agenda also draws the attention of criminals from other countries who operate without borders.

– Venezuela is in the news, so cybercriminals from any other country also come, we call their attention, and since there are no borders in the digital realm, they can launch attacks by fishing in troubled waters. What does that mean? Well, let’s see how Venezuela’s systems are, let’s see what IP addresses are and they start attacking remotely, details Núñez.

Cyberattacks and their methods

One of the most common vectors of cyberattacks in the banking sector, for example, is phishing, a technique that uses identity theft to obtain, steal, confidential information, which Núñez calls “decoy traps.”This method is based on social engineering, defined s the art of tricking people’s cognitive biases into voluntarily giving up data.

Rafael Núñez points out that these cyberattacks use psychological manipulation through emails, text messages, WhatsApp, or Telegram.

“They pose as a friend, an employee, or a trusted person, but they play with emotions (exploiting them); that is, psychological manipulation, using fear, joy, hurry, urgency, and people fall quickly,” he reasons.

The Venezuelan expert warns that criminals have become more sophisticated in their methods, going so far as to block a user’s access to their bank, then calling them and impersonating the institution to ask for passwords or coordinate cards, data that “the bank will never ask for over the phone.”

The rise of ransomware

One of the main concerns currently for digital security in the country is the increase of ransomware cases by 30 % to 40 %. This technical term refers to a malicious computer program that blocks and encrypts a company’s information, then demands a ransom, usually in cryptocurrency, to release it and return things to normal.

The specialist reveals and highlights preventively that this type of “virtual kidnapping” has already affected a large-scale telephone operator and a relevant private banking institution, with attacks that come mostly from Eastern Europe. Something that should undoubtedly prompt caution.

Given this reality, Núñez emphasizes the need for immutable and encrypted backup systems, as well as data segmentation, since “nothing is 100% secure” and current attacks can even be rented, enhanced, and programmed with the support of artificial intelligence.

Legislation and shortage of professionals

Institutionally, Núñez, who is also the director of security and a member of the board of the Venezuelan Chamber of E-commerce (Cavecom), said that legal reforms are being pushed forward.

The current Law against Computer Crimes dates back to 2001, so new regulations are being proposed to regulate artificial intelligence and to classify modern crimes such as bullying, grooming, and cyberbullying.

However, another obstacle is added to the convenient and necessary update of the legal framework: the lack of specialized human capital. Núñez emphasized that in Latin America, there is a shortage of nearly four million information security professionals.

“Many times the bank asks for a CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) and it can’t be found,” he added.

Although there are academic programs at universities located in San Antonio de Los Altos and Maracay, the specialist insists that there is a need for greater impetus and training that generates enough professionals to meet the labor demand in this field.

“I created a portal called másquecampus.com, with some updated and high-quality courses, but more initiatives and opportunities are needed. Personally, we attend, we go to international master’s programs, but there is still a need for more drive, not just in Venezuela, but in Latin America,” concludes expert Rafael Núñez Aponte.

With this advancement in their methodology, attackers can take control of an account without having to overcome additional security measures.

According to Chrome Sync, “browser syncing is incredibly convenient… and dangerously pervasive. When you turn on syncing in Chrome, Google stores a massive amount of your private data in the cloud: browsing history, open tabs, passwords, payment methods, addresses, phone numbers, information stored in Google Pay, etc.” In other words, the user’s digital life.

If you add to this the fact that Chrome functions as a universal password manager, if a hacker gains access to your account, it “opens the door to banking services, social networks, online stores, work tools, and any platform whose data is stored in the browser.”

The good news is that users can protect themselves. One of the main safeguards is to disable Chrome Sync or use the “Custom sync” option to exclude particularly sensitive data such as passwords and payment information.

In addition, Google reminds users that “it is possible to encrypt all synced information using a passphrase. While this option does disable some features—such as Smart Lock—it significantly increases security. It’s a small sacrifice in exchange for preventing an intrusion from compromising your entire digital identity.”

Among the requirements that group administrators must meet is the appointment of a Data Protection Officer (DPO), who must be certified by POTRAZ. His or her role will be to ensure compliance with the “Data Protection Act, which covers aspects such as the handling of personal information of group members, including telephone numbers.”

The Minister of Information Technology, Publicity and Communication Services of Zimbabwe, Monica Mutsvangwa, supported the measure and indicated that through the licenses it will be possible to “trace the origin of any disinformation that is spread and that may cause conflict or violence.”

It is important to note that the regulation also applies to small businesses, religious groups and informal communities that use “WhatsApp as an efficient tool for organization and dialogue.”

Reactions to the announcement have not been long in coming. Activists and citizens in general have expressed concern that the application of licenses could result in a mechanism to restrict “open and free communication online, a fundamental right in the digital age.”

On the other hand, the fee that they will have to pay for the license and appoint a DPO “could discourage many people from creating or managing groups on the platform, limiting participation and discussion on important community issues.”

At the level of personnel and skills, the research shows that some progress has been made in retaining employees dedicated to cybersecurity, but it remains a challenge for the business fabric.

So much so that just over half (56%) of those responsible for this area claim to have difficulties retaining qualified professionals in this field, although this figure has decreased by up to four points compared to last year.

ISACA believes that continuing to reduce retention problems may be difficult because the benefits offered to cybersecurity professionals have decreased, among other things, due to economic uncertainty.

In any case, this area has proven to be essential in most organizations, which must be staffed by specialized personnel.
