The decline in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in April is attributed to market interventions aimed at stabilizing the exchange rate.

Thanks to auction mechanisms, it is expected that “approximately $1.3 billion per week will enter the market to continue stabilizing the devaluation of the bolivar and further slowing the rise in prices, according to unofficial sources.”

However, “the governing body emphasized that the impact of tariffs on prices is still uncertain and that high levels of inflation could be more persistent than expected.”

During the last meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) members of the United States Federal Reserve (Fed), on September 17, they indicated their willingness to lower interest rates again this year, although with some fear that inflation could pick up.

The majority of participants in the meeting indicated that “it would be appropriate to further ease policy during the remainder of the year,” without neglecting the upside risks to their inflation outlook.

In the committee vote, those responsible for national monetary policy voted 11 to 1 for a 25 basis point reduction in interest rates “and leaving them in the range of 4% to 4.25%, the first cut in 2025.”

The results of last month’s meeting on macroeconomic projections left the path is open to “two more quarter-point cuts by the end of the year within their baseline scenario. However, six of the 19 participants projected one cut or none at all.”

The agency also reported the accumulated CPI from January to June, which rose to 13.3 %, “while the year-on-year change stands at 43.5 %.”

The National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) reflects a downward trend in prices in the South American country, thanks in part to “the reduction in food costs, which registered a 0.5 % decrease, driven by the sharp drop in vegetables (-8 %) and fruits (-2 %).”

In detail, the sectors that experienced the greatest price increases in May were Communications (4.1 %), due to increases in telephone and internet services. Next came restaurants and hotels, with a 3 % increase, driven by increases in eating out.

Meanwhile, transportation and food and non-alcoholic beverages saw the smallest variation, “with increases of 0.4 % and 0.5 %, respectively.”

The goods and services sectors, in the core CPI (2.2 %), led the price increases; followed by regulated prices (1.3 %) and seasonal prices (-2.7 %).

This was reported by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This is the highest number recorded by this nation in the last 28 years. In December 1993, according to historical data, the prices of products and services stood at 4.3 percent.
Destatis pointed out that the figure is supported by provisional data, but in two weeks it will be published in a final report where a detailed breakdown of the different categories that impacted the increase in August.

“The rise has a number of reasons, including the base effect of the low prices in 2020. The temporary lowering of VAT and the fall in fossil fuel prices are particularly affected here,” Destatis said.

As you will recall, Germany applied a 3-point reduction in VAT in the last half of last year as a strategy to boost consumption in the population, after the first wave of the coronavirus, causing an acceleration in prices in 2021 Additionally, the consequences of the introduction of the CO2 tax equivalent to 25 euros per ton, which came into effect on January 1st of this year, must be incorporated.

The increase in the price of energy, which stood at 12.6 % year-on-year in August, can be considered as one of the factors that help explain the rise in inflation. Some analysts estimate that this increase in the cost of living should be a transitory phenomenon. “Monthly inflation for August was 0.1 %.”

In the last eight months, the behavior of inflation has been showing an upward trend. “The consumer price index (CPI) rose 1.0 % in January, 1.3 % in February, 1.7 in March, 2.0 in April, 2, 5 in May, 2.3 in June and 3.8 % in July.”
