Ubisoft’s online services went down last week during an incident that the video game company has acknowledged as “cybersecurity”, and which has led to the reset of the company’s access passwords.

Ubisoft is investigating with “external experts” the “cybersecurity incident” that temporarily interrupted some games, systems and services, as reported by the company through an official statement.

The company assured that “there is no evidence” that the personal data of the players has been affected, and internally it has executed the reset of all access passwords.

This incident began in the early hours of March 3 and lasted until past noon, when Ubisoft accounts began announcing the restoration of affected services.

Ubisoft has been the victim of various cyberattacks throughout its history, which has repeatedly affected the operation of its games and services. This situation was repeated recently, since the company suffered from an attack that temporarily lowered its servers and for which millions of players were affected around the world.

The company behind the two consoles, Nintendo, announced its decision to close its online stores from March 2023. As of that date, users will no longer purchase games in the Nintendo eShop.

This type of activity is common in technology companies when their products have been out of the market for some time, although some analysts believe that in this case, Nintendo is taking the measure prematurely.

The company notified that as of March of next year users will not be able to buy new digital games for their consoles. However, it guaranteed that all those titles that are acquired until that date, both on Wii U and on 3DS, will continue to be available for installation, as well as “software updates and online play on Wii U and the Nintendo family of systems 3DS.”

In November 2012, the Wii U console was launched on the market but it only managed to sell about 13 million units. The Japanese firm was forced to evolve and in 2017 it placed its new Switch on the shelves, which has obtained extraordinary results, exceeding 100 million consoles sold and with a system that continues currently in force.

On the other hand, the 3DS laptop began its journey in 2011 and since then almost 76 million units have been sold. But with the arrival of the Switch, the console took a backseat.

Both, 3DS and Wii U have an extensive catalog that includes the names of some of the best video games that Nintendo has put on the market over the past decade. Sony has managed to sell 7.8 million units of the new generation PlayStation 5 console (PS5) since its launch in November last year until this March 31st, as revealed by the company in its financial results for fiscal year 2020.

Sony’s total video game business, which includes both its console hardware and software, posted revenue of approximately $ 21 billion, 35% more than last year and a record for the Japanese company.

The launch of PS5, with 7.8 million units sold worldwide until March 31st, 2021, surpassed the figures of its predecessor, the PS4 console, which in the same period of time reached 7.6 million consoles sold.

Of the total sales, 4.5 million were produced from its launch in November to December, while 3.3 million correspond to the first three months of 2021. The console is currently facing supply problems due to the shortage of processors that it affects the global industry.

PS4 also continues to increase its sales, and is consolidated as Sony’s second best-selling console only behind PS2, with 115.9 million units sold since its launch in 2013, and adding a million more in the first quarter of 2021.
