Elon Musk predicts AI’s arrival in space in three years

According to Elon Musk's estimates, AI could reach space in about three years, with efficient data networks thanks to the constant presence of sunlight and the absence of cycles of light and darkness

Artificial intelligence will reach space in an average period of three years, according to Elon Musk, who says that there is always sunlight there, so batteries would not be necessary, and data centers would be more efficient.

Musk has said that he plans to launch “up to a million satellites to create a network of space data centers dedicated to AI,” arguing that “space will be the most attractive and cost-effective place to install artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.”

The owner of Tesla, the social network X, and SpaceX, said on the Cheeky Pint podcast, hosted by Dwarkesh Patel, that the efficiency of solar panels in orbit is “up to five times more efficient than on Earth, as they don’t face day-night cycles, clouds, or losses due to the atmosphere.”

Meanwhile, his company SpaceX has already submitted an application to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for authorization to move forward with the project, which will be integrated with his artificial intelligence company, xAI.

Regarding the manufacture of solar panels for space use, Musk noted that it would be more affordable, “since they don’t require heavy structures, glass, or batteries.” He also downplayed the maintenance challenges of the equipment in orbit, considering modern GPUs to be sufficiently reliable once they have passed their initial operational phase.

Referring to the energy demand of this type of infrastructure, which has reached alarming levels on Earth, he explained that they seek to alleviate the pressure on electrical grids and reduce the water and land consumption required by large data centers on the planet.
