Colombian President Gustavo Petro signed the agreement on Wednesday to join the Silk Road, reaffirming his relationship with the Asian country

During his recent official visit to the People’s Republic of China, Colombian President Gustavo Petro affirmed that the South American nation would join the Belt and Road Initiative, known as the Silk Road, a decision that became a reality this Wednesday, May 14, with the signing of the agreement.

The Colombian president reaffirmed in Asia his desire to join this “global integration project led by the Asian giant that seeks to expand commercial and cultural connections between Asia, Europe, and Africa.”

The Colombian Presidential website includes Petro’s statements, which clearly state Colombia’s desire to play a leading role in the digital transformation of the planet.

Petro stated: “Both Latin America and Colombia are free, sovereign, and independent, and the relations we establish with any people in the world must be based on conditions of freedom and equality.”
