ChatGPT to test conversation-based ads in the United States

Advertising has arrived at OpenAI's chatbot. In the coming weeks, ChatGPT will begin testing conversation-based ads for adult users of the free or the more affordable ChatGPT Go version

ChatGPT will begin testing ads related to conversations with adult users in the United States in the coming weeks. The OpenAI chatbot will initially display ads to customers of the free and the more affordable ChatGPT Go versions. This means the test will not affect the other subscriptions: ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Pro, ChatGPT Business, and ChatGPT Enterprise.

ChatGPT will begin testing conversation-based ads for adult users in the coming weeks. “In this first phase, which will be tested with US users over 18 years of age, these ads will appear at the end of responses, whenever there is a sponsored product or service relevant to the conversation.”

According to OpenAI, the advertising will be clearly labeled as such; the ads will be “separate from the chatbot’s responses. Users will also be able to obtain information about why the ad appeared or dismiss it.”

According to OpenAI, “the ads will not influence responses to user questions or requests and are optimized to be as objectively useful as possible, with a new interface that aims to go ‘beyond static messages and links.’”

The company has stated that user data will be protected at all times, ruling out the possibility of sharing or selling information to advertisers. Regarding advertising, the platform will allow users to disable personalization options and “delete the data used for ads at any time.”
